SSE Coire Glas

V2G – When can 0.0003% make a difference?

What a fantastic place to trial new technology…

Coire Glas is the first large scale pumped hydro storage scheme to be developed in the UK for more than 40 years. It is located on the shores of Loch Lochy in the Scottish Highlands, between Fort William and Inverness and has a potential capacity of up to 1300MW with energy storage of around 30GWh. It will double Great Britain’s existing electricity storage capacity, providing homegrown renewable energy when the demand is high or other variable generation is low.

So before we progress lets put that in V2G terms…we’d need 650,000 vehicles connected and discharging to match this amazing project!

Coire Glas Project Office

The Coire Glas Project Office site in Invergarry provides facilities for SSE Renewables staff to operate from when working on the project.
The site consists of:

  • Main offices – electrically heated, with kitchen (all electric) and desk/meeting room facilities
  • Store – drying facilities, electrically heated
  • Charge points – 6 bays of 32A single phase charging

The site DNO supply is three phase 69 kVA with TT earthing.

V2G & Load Management

For this project we installed:

  • a Hubeleon Duo V2G: capable of delivering 2x 7.2kW bays of charging and 2.3kW of export/V2G
  • a Hubeleon site monitor/load manager: that monitored the office/store and 6 bays of charging

The Hubeleon site monitor enables site loads to be monitored critical in the design of load balancing and optimization of V2G strategies. As part of the site install an assessment of the daily routines captured power behaviours.

Site monitoring picks up the power flows but for energy strategy design it’s important to know where those power flows are coming from (to predict duration and demand). This delivered the information required by our expert team of energy strategy software design to deliver a meaningful charge/discharge strategy whilst also protecting the incoming supply from overload.

Our objective is the standardization of AC V2G as a viable means to grid balancing. Hangar19 is one of the UK’s foremost independent engineering companies in the EVSE space. We have been a driving force in UK projects requiring V2G solutions. See our past projects for domestic and commercial V2G trials enabled either with our technical solutions, system/process designs or operational support.

Hubeleon Duo V2G

The Hubeleon Duo V2G is a state of the art AC bi-directional charge point capable of leveraging the V2L facility of MG, Hyundai, Kia and other OEMS that provide V2L via the type 2 charging port.
Designed with the support of InnovateUK and funding from DESNZ the Duo V2G is one of the UK’s leading bi-directional charge points – unique in the AC V2G space.
